Default AAR: Bombing Midway (Marechallannes - US Navy)

    Midway Bombing

4th June – CV 8 USS Hornet launched a CAP in a sector near the Midway Islands. It’s only a question of hours when the Japanese will start their attack versus Midway.

The main part of VF-8 stayed near the CV because nobody knows where the Japanese fleet was at the moment. Near Midway, the CAP spotted a formation of Japanese Val dive bombers heading eastwards, escorted by fighters.

Lt.Co. Robert Schneider adviced the other pilots to stay in formation and to head directly for the bombers. They had an advantage coming out of the sun.

The enemy flight were three bombers and three fighters. Their target: The Airfield and military installations on Midway.

Lt. Chapman and his wingman Lt.Jg. Kyte closed the formation.

The Japanese Zero fighter escort realized the incoming Widcats and prepared intercept maneuvers.

Lt.Co. Schneider and Lt. Chapman concentrated their fire on the leading bomber, ignoring the attacking Zeroes. Bullets from a Zero hit the squadron leaders sturdy Wildcat, but the shooter was hit himself by Lt.Jg. Sieradzki’s MG fire.

A seconds later, cannon and MG shells from another Zero hit Lt.Jg. Sieradzki’s plane. A distracted bullet wounded the US pilot on the shoulder.

Lt.Jg. Kyte shot at another Japanese Zero, hitting the fuselage.

VF-8 breached into the bomber formation. All bombers were damaged by MG fire, but no critical hits were dealt out. The Jap gunners answered with angry MG fire.

Unfortunately a black marked Zero shot down Lt.Jg. Kyte’s plane with a single salvo from his cannons and MGs. The US pilots heared a short message in the radio: “Damn’ – going down…” but have no chance at the moment to have look for their comrade.

The price seemed too high for the island defence. But the airfield had to be operational at all costs.

The Wildcat formation passed the bombers, followed by MG fire from the Jap gunners.

Lt.Co. Schneider and the rest of the formation turned with Immelmann maneuvers to hunt the bombers. The Japanese Zeroes turned to go for the US fighters.

Lt. Chapman realized that Lt.Jg. Kytes’s last shot sealed the fate of the leading dive bomber. The plane dropped burning in the sea.
He heads directly for the nearest incoming Zero and both planes exchange bullets and hit each other.

When passing Lt. Chapman’s Wildcat, the Zero became a victim of Lt. Co. Grumman F4F-4’s incredible firepower. The first aerial victory of this fight!
Meanwhile Lt. Chapman was in range of one of one of the bombers.

The both remaining Zeroes performed Immelmann turns, but they misjudged the speed of the US planes.

A fatal mistake! Lt.Co. Schneider and Lt. Chapmann concentrated their fire on the Zero with the red markings and sent the Jap to the sea. A shared kill!
Lt. Sieradzki headed for the other Zero, but missed. But the Japanese himself couldn’t hit him, too.

Lt.Co. Schneider reacted quickly and adviced his Wingman to break off the formation and to go for the last Zero.

He and Lt. Chapmann concentrated their fire again. This time on of the dive bombers.

The Jap gunner didn’t seem to like Lt. Chapmanns company, sending stripes of bullet fire versus his Wildcat. The steady gunner fire became critical.

Lt.Jg. Sieradzki managed to get on the last Zeroes six and damaged it.

A well placed and incredibly quick salvo from the squadron leader‘s MGs finished the second bomber off. (Ace ability / Itchy Trigger Finger)

The dive bomber went down to the Pacific waves.

VF-8 destroyed the last two Japanese attackers.

The Zero had no chance to escape and Lt.Jg. Sieardzki scored his first aerial victory.

Lt.Co. Schneider and Lt. Chapman finished off the last dive bomber, together. Another shared aerial victory.

With a damaged engine (a final present from the Jap gunner), one pilot wounded and all planes seriously damaged, VF-8 returned to the USS Hornet.
The attack on Midway continued, but VF-8 had done his part by shooting down three bombers, before they reached Midway.

    Result:

    Lt.Jg. Sieradzki:

    1d6 → [3] = (3) Out of Action

Unfortunately the campaign is over for Lt.Co. Schneider's brave wingman. But he did his job and shot down an enemy fighter. The squadron leader will bring him persoanlly a bottle of wine to the CV's med station.

    Lt.Jg. Kyte:

    1d6 → [6] = (6) - 1 for the explosion = 5 Bailed out.

Lt.Jg. Kyte made it out of his shot down plane. A Catalina flyboat picked him up and he transferes a peplacement Wildcat from Midway Airbase to the USS Hornet. Time to celebrate his second birthday and first aerial victory.

A hard work to AI control six planes and plan the four Wildcats. I needed around 3 hours for this mission.

I didn't use the Aim rule (additional "A" damage marker) and didn't use collision rules for the AI planes.

The Zeroes were deadly on short distance and they damaged my Wildcats badly. I safed Schneider's & Chapmann's Evasion abilities till the end. You recognized how quik the fight was over for Kyte.

The Zeroes had problems to fly the curves because they were too near at the edge of the map. Maybe it's better to start more in the middle of the map, so that they have place to maneuver.

Frankly, a great AAR, Sven The mat gives it a climatic touch, I swear! The picture with a Val lurking down to ocean is terrific!
I'm a little disappointed my alter ego is out of action, but that's life

Great stuff, Sven. I really enjoyed all the action.
Glad Ltn Kyte survived the crash.
Is he any relation to F/O Kyte?, perhaps a grandson who migrated to the US?

Incidently great playing mat as well.

Nice AAR! I normally start attackers four firing sticks from their target. That gives them a chance to survive to the target!!

Just catching up on all these early missions from before I got hooked on WGS. Sven.
That was a superb mission, even if young Lt Kyte's American cousin did lose his aircraft.

    Very sad, yet heroic.
I read the report of his action in the newspaper a month or two ago.

Great AAR Sven, love the mat. A lot of work involved controlling so many planes, well done. Those Zeros seem deadly at close range.

    Print, yes.

Send to France, no. It's a small local shop.

Including shipping cost you will be around 50 € Paul.

Maybe you find a similar store near to you that prints textiles and banners.

nice AAR i am also planning a midway campaign. still i an surprised i was planning a 6f4f against 6 mitsubishis am6 and now i have a question for you. isiit balanced 6 vs 6. wherecani get the planes points to use as guide? again awsome report

I have no point system at hand.

If you play versus a buddy, this seems balanced if you use 2 F4F-F in the US formation.

If you play it with solitär rules, it depensd on the side you choose. Play then with 5 versus 6 AI controlled enemies.

I have been working on the lines of each model representing 9 actual aircraft. I developed this for a scenario carrier v carrier. As I have the Yorktown and Zuikaku i worked on 90 planes each = 10 models each. Each side would be given 3 dive, 3 torpedo bombers and 3 fighters. The 10th aircraft was up to the team to choose. Either a 4th dive, torpedo or fighter plane. Each side would then decide how many fighters to have as CAP. The remaining planes forming a strike force against the opposing carrier. It was for a one off demo game at shows. Perhaps you could work along those lines for your campaign then balance whilst at the start is an integral part of your game, the actual tactical battle might have forces dependent on what aircraft you had left in your campaign.

G'day Paul! Sven used War at Sea Models for his Carrier Attack AAR as did I for my Bismark Sea AAR. I find they work well but it helps if you have a made up card to place under the ship so your aircraft can fly over. Also helps with the AA gun arcs.

Not yet Paul. I'm still under the weather after over doing it a trifle. Trying to keep myself ready for Derby on the 29th.

Downloading the ship cards and reducing them for the A&A ships might work, destroyers might be a bit small. I only have the Hornet and an old WW1 US destroyer (sunk in 41/42 I think) for the pacific in A&A and will give them a work out soon.
