Thread: A three-cornered contest.

    Default A three-cornered contest.

Just a quick game for 3 players.

Each player had a late-model scout, and a 2-seater. The Lithuanian player had to recon the Red positions (do a stall over the target), the Red player had to do the same over the Lithuanian target, and the Polish player had to photograph both.

As you can see, things got very confusing, all three sides having to both defend one target, and overfly (at stall) another.

The rear gunner on the Rumpler was a crack shot - 2 B shots, then an A from the D.VII, then another 2 Bs (one after a jam).

That was after he'd forced down a Red Snipe!

Results - all pictures were taken by all sides, but the Snipe and 153 were both forced down over friendly lines. The Snipe by an Explosion card, the 153 by damage. The Snipe was repairable - only the fuel line was shot away, the 153 burnt up after the pilot abandoned it.

    Beautiful, Zoe!
Can we see these beautiful birds in their less usual colours more closely? Please?

    I second Quim's request, Zoe!
    Anyway - interesting scenario there

    I third Andrzej's request!!
    What?!
I can do it. There is no rule about thirding someone's request, is there?!

Nice mission - but not enough planes to do the repaints.

I've got to when I saw the first two pictures...

    Nothing for my sensible stomach.

OK, I'll take some pictures with a better camera.

The Snipe is my own interpretation of what it probably looked like between two profiles. Similar to the one shown, but tail flash overpainted in red (but with original still showing).
The RE8 is pretty standard, there are many photos of such machines.

The D.VII is from a photo, showing a very weathered and streaky doping job, more light tan than anything else according to some profiles .
The Rumpler is again from a photo, with the same pattern of national markings in 1920, white double barred cross on red shield. Again, the paint job looks as if it was applied pretty carelessly. LSK green and brown/purple.

The 153 is standard Kosciusko squadron "sworl pattern" on wings and tail only, not on fuselage. Many photos of this exist.
The Br14 is standard French pattern, but with green/white checked squadron markings. The check colours might be wrong, but are plausible.

I deliberately tried for a "neat military professional" look on the Poles, a "military professional RAF hurriedly daubed with red" for the Reds, and a "Black market shoddy" for the Lithuanians. It's the style as much as the markings that distinguish them.

    Umm -- what's a "153"?

A plane that's really quite different from a standard Albatros D.III. More like a stronger D.Va.

    Beautiful, Zoe!
What an amazing idea for a repaint.
I can imagine Corto Maltese in one of those in 1922.
You've taken the photos early in the morning or late in the afternoon? The light is beautiful.

Late Afternoon - couldn't find the good camera, so I used my phone camera. It was a race to take the photos before the light was gone, but I'm pleased with the (quite accidental) effect.

    Thanks for the kind words.

Some of the schemes match cards in the WoW sets - the Snipe and D.VII for example.

I've become fascinated with Polish history. Partly because of the shared history in WWII, the debt the UK owes the Polish pilots in the BoB, the Polish Paras at Arnhem etc. The struggle over the last 1000 years for Poland to be, well, Poland. Sometimes Greater Poland (much to the Lithuanians and Ukrainians chagrin), but mostly fighting ridiculous odds and winning more often than not. The Russian-Polish war and Battle for Warsaw comes to mind. History would have been very different had Poland lost that one, a "Cold War" with the Iron Curtain on the Rhein by 1925.

I hope one day I'll be able to visit, and show you some pictures of the highest mountain in Australia, not so far from Canberra. Mount Kosciusko. I'll bring along my Polish machines - and some of their historical opponents too.

All custom, and if anyone wants some, just ask.

The Snipe, RE8, Rumpler and Br14 are all Nexus - only the Rumpler is repainted, the others just touch-ups and decals. The rest are Shapeways, Camels and D.VIIs too rare to repaint.

    Thanks everyone for the compliments.

OK, PM me and I'll print some off. I have decals for a Nieuport 24bis, an Oeffag (with sworl cammo), and a Br14. Tell me if you want any particular squadron or personal markings.

The Nieuport is this one - showing original markings.

I'm late to the party here (been a busy weekend!), but want to add my admiration. Lovely aircraft and schemes - I've a particular interest in things Russian of this period, and I'm still considering concentrating on the Imperial Russian Air Service. The only things preventing me are concerns about availability of aircraft and decals, plus whether I'd ever have a suitable opposing force to fly against!

You can still get all the aircraft pictured over the net. The Snipe might be a little pricey, but the RE8, Rumpler and Br14 are easily available. For the rest - Shapeways does them.

Common Imperial aircraft made by Shapeways include the Bleriot XI, Farman F.30, the Nieuport 11,16,17/23, 24bis, 24, 27, Spad VII and S.2, Voisin 3, Caudron G.4, Strutter, and Ilya Maurometz.

These were all flown by various Red and White factions as well, along with Albatros C.III and C.XV, Camel, RE.8 and DH.9.

Opponents - Austrian and German, also available via Shapeways. Albatros of all kinds, Phoenix D.I and D.II, Hansa Brandenberg D.I, Lohner C.I, AEGs, DFWs, Rumplers.

Extend it to the civil War period, and the sky's the limit. Freikorps Junkers D.Is, Red Halberstadt CL.IVs, Polish Friedrichshafen G.IIIs, Ukrainian Dolphins... and nearly everyone had Fokker D.VIIs.

For decals - just ask. I already have the designs for Imperials, as you can see, plus many White factions and independence movements. Austrian and German of course. If I don't have them now, I'll be making some for my own use anyway.
