Thread: Memoir 44

    Default Memoir 44

    Anyone playing this game?

I wish I would have seen this website a while ago.

    http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/

I now own and play AH Battle Cry-American Civil War

I recently learned that Memoir 44 is by the same designer and uses the same battle system.

I am currently learning Tide of Iron, but can definately see getting into Memoir 44 as it looks much easier especailly for playing with youth. I am amazed by the ton of material that is available in the form of expansions and online support.

Would love to hear others impresssions of this game especially if you have played it as well as Tide of Iron.

    TIA,

    Aaron

I've not played, but my LGS carries it and has a pretty big following for it. I've looked at it several times though.

Hi I am playing both "Tide of Iron" and "Memoir 44"!
Memoir 44 for 2 Years, with all the expansions...

If you know Battle Cry you easy understand Memoir...
But for many Board gamer, Memoir 44 is the Better choice...like for me

It is much easier than Tide of Iron, the biggest difference is in the gaming time.
And the Luck factor, but in my opinion is Memoir 44 is more fun then Tide of Iron!
And you can play Memoir 44 with everyone, even if people have no interests in WWII !!!

It is of course the better game for youth, no doubt

Yeah, they appear to be two toatlly different systems with time commitments. Having now played Battle cry I can see the appeal of Memoir 44. Like you said anyone could probably play even if they are not a wargammer by nature.

I am guessing in comparrison ToI gets into a bit more detail and time involvement. Depening on the scenarios ToI claims it can be 1-4 hrs where Memoir is 30-60 minutes.

It also appears you can expand Memoir into a multi player games as well????

My son really enjoys Battle cry and we can play it easily on a schoolnight a couple times. I like ToI, but with the time commitment it will have to be a bit more planned out vs, a casual pick up game.

M44 is a great game. I had the base game for about 18 months and have also bought all the expansions. My 11 yo can join in which is a major consideration. Set up is easy and a game can be brought to a conclusion within the hour.

Along with WoW, m44 is my main gamimg genre.

I would really like to get hold of Battle Cry but it has been unavailable in the UK for some years now.

Battle Cry is no longer available in the U.S. either. I aquired a used copy from E-bay back in Late November and Finally was able to play with my sons this last week.

    Thumbs up New games

Richard Borg, who designed both Battle Cry and M44, will be at Recon2010 in Florida, USA, at the end of April, where he will unveil his new game, Command & Colors Napoleanic. He also has a Command & Colors Ancients. Command & Colors is the system he developed for Battle Cry, then sold the game to AH, who were bought out by Hasbro, I believe. Super great guy and a great game designer.

    Very cool.

I like the system overall. It does not seem like a "wargame" heavy system which will be perfect to get younger players interested.

In Many ways similar to WoW in the simplicity.

I did some web surfing and determined it is something I will add to my never ending "want" list. Played another scenario of Battle cry tonight with my son as we continue our campaign through the war. Now tied 3-3.

Found this introductory video for Memoir 44 for anyone else interested:

    Hi again,...

Here is the site from Days of Wonder, with all the Memoir 44 stuff!
    http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/

And of course you can play Memoir 44 in Multiplayer scenarios, it is called "Overlord".
In this case; two boards were lay together, and up to 8 Players , 4 on 4, play each other. And you can Play in a Breaktrough format.
But you can all read about it on the Days of Wonder Webside, if you search a little time.

There is one game , which is familiar with Memoir and Battle Cry, it is called "BattleLore" it is more like Fantasy, and it is great for youth too,....

It's a great game, my brother and I play it for hours at a time. He says the only thing he hates about it is the card called Finest Hour. It never works for him and he says it's my finest hour . But that's just our little joke on the game. We both love it and I have some of the expansion packs.

Ohhh Yes I know that with the "Finest Hour" Card
The dice didn't fall , for the troops, I had on the Board...
Only for them they are not on the Board

I like the "Armor Assault" Card...the tanks could attack with one additional die...
Very deadly, if you do overun, for tanks!!!!

Ahhh I do must play some rounds the next days...

I played it a lot when I was living in Iceland last year. It was easy to pick up and made for a great playable game that could be concluded within an hour or so, so you could refight it by swapping sides in the same evening. I found I rarely won against my Icelandic opponent (I don't know how he got so good, they don't even have an army up there...) but we could easily play over some beer and pizza. It's not perfectly historically accurate, but provides a good game, which I guess is the main thing. I bought the Eastern Front Expansion and even went as far as painting the tanks for a better look overall. I left it behind in Reykjavik (for my opponent) so haven't played it for a while but have good memories of it.

The Blue Baron : Split your group of players into two teams, one for
each camp. The optimal number of players is eight
(one Commander-in-Chief and three Field Generals
for each camp), though fewer players can easily be
accommodated. With 3 players per side, the
Commanders-in-Chief sit in the Center and also act
as the Center Field Generals; with 2 or even 1 player
per side, the players play all roles collectively, for
    their camp

If you want to play with 3-4 Players, you can play a normal game.
You could split the army in two divisions, you must only remind which troops belongs to which player.
You must choose as a team, which card you will play.
We did some games in this way, it was totally fun!

    But if you want to play with 5-8 Players;
In that case you need Overlord and two Boards, to set together!
But if you own the Overlord expansion, you didn't need all Game components twice.
You have masses of tokens, in the overlord expansion, to replace soldiers and Tanks and so on...

Well, I entered the fold today....I was off work today, so I took in 4 of my old AH wargames that we will not play again or I had a double copy to the LGS that buys and sells old games and was able to get a nice in store credit. I picked up Memoir 44 as planned.

We had our first chance to play last week and really liked it....basically the same is Battle Cry with a little more complexity.

So, what expansions if any would you recommend getting to enhance the basic game?

If you say all....then what order would you get them in?

Just wondering which ones you think add the most value to the play right away.

I think Terrain Pack & Eastern Front add the most to the game.

Med. & Pacific are good. Pacific is definitely better than Med.

The addon game board is nice so you can have a desert and winter boards.

Once you get a couple of the theater packs...DEFINITELY get the Air Pack because it goes back and redoes ALL the scenarios to feature all the new rules + Air in cases where it existed, AND includes the various new terrain tile options.

You DEFINITELY want the terrain pack + a theater pack first though.

Indeed, you need as first "the Terrain Pack"
it opens ton's of Scenarios for you. The self made and the original!
And for one of the Expansions, I would say take the "Eastern Front"
It is the most fun of all! Mass of "Armor Fights" and lot of "Material battles"

The "Pacific Theater" is more, especially the Japanese Army, Infantry Battles!
They had very strong Doctrine, they can Battle at full Strength (Four Figures) in close Combat with 1 additional die, in total 4 dice... Very Strong Close combat attack! And they must Ignore the first flag, rolled against them!

And the US marines Had the "Gung Ho" they may always activate one more unit, than indicated on the cards! Very useful!!!!

But the "Meditereanen Theater" is my Personal Favorite, it is fun to play, and some scenarios are Great like the ; The Hell Fire Pass, Dug in at Sidi Omar, Into the Cauldron, and the best of all , Flanking Maneuver at Bir Hakeim!!!

On Days of Wonder .com you found fully Battle reports!

I do NOT...Repeat..DO NOT want to be pushed into buying M44, . I made a change from A&AM as my main wargame to TOI and am glad of it. However, i did alot of research on the game before hand, and then i bought the base game and both expansions in one shot. Again, i'm glad i did. Its a great game, and most importantly, for me, it is quite playable solitare. I have heard that M44 is not that savvy for solitare play. Although i like the boards and pieces.... PLEASE!!!!!!!!! Do not make me buy this game system. With my over compulsive nature, even if i don't like it, i'll have to buy all of the expansions.... AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!! I hate this thread...

Yeah....don't do it man.....you will be broke.

I have only played a half dozen times and am already looking at the other expansions available.

ToI is great...M44 is as well....two very different games and serve different purposes. M44 is great for a quick game or two within an hour including set up and very easy for new and experienced players.

ToI is a bit more serious, and requires a bit more time commitment depending on the scenario.

M44 is based on the command and colors battle system which I have found I enjoy.

A very simplistic comparison would be it is like play risk or Axis and Allies.

ToI and M44 is not a either or choice like I initially thought as they really are apples and oranges as they both fill a different need. The subject is WWII, but that is pretty much where the simularities end.

  47. #47

    Default

Hey you can dump a lot of money into TOI as well. I think think the boxed expansions are about 60 bucks a pop which is 120 bucks plus the revised maps & Designer's Series book are about 30 bucks each for another 60. That's a total of 180 you might have left to dump into TOI....

You can get boxed expansions for M'44 for around $25 - $35 (air pack). So...you could presumably get 5 things for M'44 and still be cheaper than getting all the TOI stuff....and it's A LOT more gaming given that there is STILL after FOUR years no TOI editor that covers the expansions, but there is a vibrant and well used M'44 editor that provides a lot more life to the system....

Don't let me push you though...I own everything for both...

Not many conventions under my belt...last fall I attended NavCON in South Milwaukee. LGS (The Last Square in Madison) is always telling me about them.

Have not played the ones you mentioned.

    For A&A I have:
    AA50
    AAP (original)
    Guadalcanal

Otherwise my primary game rotation includes:
    AAM
    War at Sea
Wings of War (WWI and WWII) of course
    Tide of Iron
    Now Memoir 44

Like to get out some of the old AH board games as well:
    War at Sea
    Victory in the Pacific
    Gettysburg
    Midway

I do not venture much into the fantasy other than an occassional skirmish of SWM which my one son is into.

  50. #50

    Default

Picked up a 2nd copy of M44 used in like new condition.....I can see Overlord on the horizon.....This will be the game we play tonight at game night.

Depending on how many show up we can play tournamant style with 3 games(LGS has a copy for use) going at one time.
