Default Faked WWI Dogfight photos revealed

I remember some of these in the Purnell WWI Aircraft compendium from the 70s. They do at least give some flavour of what things must have been like, but must be something of an embarrassment for the connections of those who parted with large sums of cash to get hold of them.

Ouch.. Who can you trust anymore. That was quite the payoff for a model-maker.

Yes, But I can remember seeing these as a child and remember the awe they inspired.

Wasn't one used for the cover of Jane's WW1 aircraft?

These have been kicking around for years. One book in the late 1970s reprinted some of them with the rider that some or all were probably faked.

As a photographer, the giveaway is that is some shots the sunlight appears to be coming from different directions. Or - to put it another way - the shadow areas change direction within one picture. They do, however, convey a sense of mood at the very least.

I remember seeing some of these photos on display at the US Air Force Museum years ago, along with a warning that they were suspected of having been faked.

Also the total lack of motion blur on the units. Cameras of the period were good, but not *that* good....

i remember seeing these when i 1st started getting interested in ww1 history. i always thought the airplanes looked like they were in too close proximity to one another but when you see them published in a reputable book you have to assume theyve authenticated them.

Damn! And there's me thinking they had 3200 ASA/ISO film in those days!
    Good point.

    Thumbs up

These pics were discussed in dept some years ago on the Aerodrome historical forum.
It took quite a while before experts realised they had been faked.
