Default Mission 8: Bomb the Base (Central Powers - Blackronin)

"Are you okay, Ltn. Joachim? Are you hurt?" "Nein, Herr Hauptmann Gabriel. I can give you my report right now if you want to." "Mein Gott! To hell with the report!! I was worried about you! But you do seem to be able to always come back home! I've brought schnapps to keep us warm." "Danke, Herr Hauptmann Gabriel!" "To hell with the Herr hauptmann, Joachim!! Call me only Gabriel! Drink!" "Danke, Herr... Gabriel!!" "And don't report! Tell me what the hell happened!" "I was grabbed away from the skies and thrown to the ground as if I was a leaf..." "Mein Gott!! Drink! Tell me. Everything!!"

"I was escorting a Gotha's flight that was sent by the high command to bomb an enemy airfield. Those birds are big!" "Yes, they are." "I was escorting them, but I felt for a moment that it was I that was being escorted."

"We were unlucky. A squadron of enemy Camels was there, ready, and waiting for us. I think that there was an Ace amongst them. But I really didn't had any time whatsoever to check that." "An Ace?! Who?!" "The Camel had the paintings that belong to the British Ace F.O. Kyte, I think." "I see. It's possible. He operates in that area."

"The Camels went directly against us. I was expecting them to target the bombers..." "They didn't?!" "No. It was a shock but they targeted me first..."

"I really didn't expect that, Gabriel." "It's understandable. Those Britts were always less than predictable..." "Yes... So I was putting myself between the Gotha's and the Camels..."

"At my left, a hidden nest with a machine-gun opened up against me..." "Oh, that also?!"

"The ace scored a solid punch against me."

"The Camel behind him also hit me with a perfect aim. My Albatros seemed made of paper, shaking and being raked by bullets."

"One of the machine-guns in the ground failed to hit me, but the other..."

"...hit me so violently that I believed the Albatros to be vaporized at any time soon..." "And did you fired back?"

"Yes. I hit the ace squarely in his cockpit, but it was all too fast for me to really see what damage I had done to the enemy."

"And the gunners in the bombers tried to help me. But they were far and did little or no damage to the enemy. I for myself clearly understood that my plane would hit the ground very soon." "Gott!!"

"Unable to turn, I pressed forward, but the third Camel turned left and and killed my plane... It was the end..." "You fell?" "I was still able to fire against the gun's nest, but that was it. I crash landed and ran away from my plane trying to escape. But I couldn't take my eyes from the skies and from our bombers as they pressed into their targets."

"I could see the tracing bullets going from bombers to scouts and back. I was running away, certain that from the airfield they soon would send someone to apprehend me..."

"The bombers were giving a good fight and I think that the early attention the camels gave to me, gave the bombers a higher ground. The Camels were taking a beating."

"From the airfield they sent a truck, probably filled with soldier, in my direction, but then I've got lucky." "Why?" "One of the Camel was set of on fire by the concentrated fire from the Gothas." "I see..."

"As the burning Camel made a steep turn to the right, I could see that his fate was sealed." "And the truck they sent to get you choose to rescue the pilot, was it?" "Yes, indeed."

"It finally crashed in a field a mile away from me. I hid in the middle of a dense vegetation zone and watched the bombing unfold. The Camels by now had lost a bit of their grip."

"And the bombers?" "They cleared the guns nests with their own machine-guns and were preparing for their bombing run. A scaring thing altogether. I think that big bombers will be a thing of the future..."

"One of the bombers drop his load over the hangars, but he just hit one." "An empty hangar?" "Judging by the explosion... I'd say that it was everything but empty..." "And the other?"

"The other went straight for the airstrip. It destroyed it cleanly..." "A good bombing run, then..." "Indeed. I watched them turning away, unable to take my eyes from them."

"They dropped the remaining bombs and turned back home." "And you?" "I, for myself, start running away the fastest I could." "And how did you got here so fast?"

"Well, Gabriel, it involves a French girl, a Brittish Observation Balloon, the wind blowing in the correct direction and a bottle of Gin..." "What?!"

"Can I have one more cup of that wonderful Schnapps?" "A French girl you say?!"

    Final Notes
Although my only player-controlled plane went down in the beginning of turn 3, I really enjoyed the rest of the game playing a game strictly controlled by the system and the mission.
I had previously decided the path of the bombers creating an optimal movement in a map before the game started. They performed it without deviation right until they left the table.
The Camels decided, with a die roll, who they would fight. On a roll of 6 they would attack my plane. Two of them rolled 6's!! I think that I was doomed from the very start.
The rest is history. The bombers destroyed 1 hangar and the airstrip. The hangar was number 6:

    1,2 - 2 empty hangers 1 mission point
3 - 1 hanger with bomber inside 3 mission points
4,5 - 2 hanger with fighter inside 2 mission points
6 - 1 hanger repair hanger full of highly trained mechanics 5 mission points

9 mission points was the outcome.

    Mission Result:

Kills, Casualties and Damage (they speak for themselves):

I rolled a 10 and I escaped unscathed to fight another day.

I rolled a 12!! so this Britts escaped miraculously from his burning wreck...

F.O. Kyte was hurt, but just slightly. It is told in both sides of the trenches that he "cleaned" his wound with Gin and then he gave himself a shot against "any possible parasite in the wound" by drinking the rest of the bottle straight.

F.O. Kyte showing his well known generosity also cleaned this pilot's wound. They proceed to complete the disinfection of the wound by singing a very nice song about "french girls legs that opened like butterfly wings". Several other pilots joined in.

The bombers landed safely home. Damaged but serviceable.

"And you crossed no-man's land in the observation balloon during the night?"
    "Indeed. The wind was perfect."
"I need another schnapps... And the French girl?"
"Gabriel! I'm a gentleman. I won't tell you nothing about that!!"
"Of course not, Joachim!! Another cup?"
    "Yes, please."
"Drink, my friend. Now, about the French girl and the bottle of gin..."

Message dropped in a Gin Bottle over the Eagles airfield some days later.

Thus the Legend grows Herr Joachim!
I am glad that you made good use of the bottle of Gin I dropped into your bushes. It is a lot easier to spot a man from the air than those buffoons of squadies on the ground.
Till we meet again over the trenches my honourable adversary,
    I remain your obedient servant.
Frederic. O. Kyte. Officer commanding 52sq. (The Bulldogs.)

Seems to be your looooong free weekend.

    Nice AAR & pitures.

Good show with the two (Paper-)Gothas, Joaquim, but next time let the giants take the first bursts.

Maybe we'll see more. heavy Bomber action after Mission 10.

Another fine report, Quim!!! Great you accomplished the mission for our boys Your pilot ran a bit out of luck this time; meeting honorable Kyte in the air must have been a great adventure (how did you get his plane, there?).

Oh, by the way, have you noticed that my PC von Oppeln died in a fatal collision? I really had a bad night, that time...

Thanks, Andrzej... I guess that the 3 beers I drank already twisted your head. A direct connection between Portugal and Poland!!

The plane isn't mine. It was a present from Rob to Inęs. She just allows me to use it.
We already played a game with it, but the camera was low on batteries and I couldn't take photos. And a good thing it was because she downed my three Albatroses in less than nothing. But that's for my "other" campaign. We will repeat that scenario very soon.

I've followed von Oppeln's sad demise. But you carried on valiantly with a guy named Lisbon, am I right?

It really did! But instead of beers I was switching screens between this report and a financial report! Sorry for that error!
