Thread: Evening All

    Default Evening All

Its been a number of years since I was on here just popped back to see what's new and who's still here.

if [and this is a big IF] I was planning on getting back into WoW what packs/sets/ are still around for the WWI era?
I see on Ebay that prices for the series 1,2,3,&4 [especially the Fokker triplane] are ridiculous.

do I have to buy planes else where and get the Litko bases?

nice to catch up with some of the old guys.

    Cheers

    G'day Greywolf & welcome back!

If you check out the Hobby section you will discover we have been filling the void with 3D printed aircraft from Shapeways plus kits from Skytrex & Revesco but of course you do have to paint them.

However the good news is that the new owner is about to release a Series 5 lot of early war Aircraft. Fok E.III,
DH-2, Morane Bullets & Halberstadts. A site supporter 12-7 games is offering preorder discounts.
Release is slated for 6th August & they released Gotha & Caponi Bomber models early in July.
Upgraded Rules & Damage decks are also due soon.

thx I'll have to see what range of planes are out there. Never bought from Skytrex, I have bought Raiden Miniatures [1/285 WWII], and CnC miniatures [1/285 WWII] been looking at Heroic and Ros [WWI 1/300th]

    What scale is WoW?

    Thx Sven,

hard to believe its been over 2 years [most likely even more] since I was on. my kids are older now and my Brother inlaw is keen to learn how to play so its time to dip my toes back in [small at first] we'll see where it goes from there.

Are all of the rules and manoeuvre decks still around [eg downloads?]

If/when I get back into WoW I'll either go all official miniatures or go for other brands metal versions and paint them myself. [wouldn't mix and match. one or the other]

    cheers

Welcome back Alan ,WoW or WoG as it now is called is 1/144 for WW1 & 1/200 for WW2.
Hopefully soon new minis will be available with reprints in the not too distant future, well we can hope cant we

Alan, check the www.aresgames.eu website there will be a new "Rules & Accesoires Pack", soon.

If you want to make a general restart, wait for the new WW I series V planes (Airco D.H.2/Eindecker/Morane/Halberstadt).

A reprint of the classic Dr.I, Camel, etc. is planed, but I'm afraid we'll see them not before 2013.

For WW II an old Deluxe Set woud be the best. The new WoG Rules can be downloaded everywhere.

not a paper pusher, minis all the way.

just got alot on at the moment [American Civil Warmaster(Union & Confederate 6mm), Blitzkrieg Commander II(6mm Germans & Soviets), Future War Commander(6mm Tech-Orks & Feral-Orks), Tutatis:Fantasy Gaelic football(28mm Poffy, Dwarf, Orc, Necro, Lizard Teams), Warmachine:Cygnar Faction(28mm+),Zombicide Board Game(Zombie Survivor game), Super Dungeon Explore board Game(A Dungeon Crawl game for the kids and me), Man O War(Fantasy sea battles), Warmaster(10mm Fantasy game), X-Wing(Star Wars space combat game done by Fantasy Flight Games,)]

So you can see my miniature hoarding hasn't stopped just got bigger, I still have a hankering for some WWI biplanes and triplanes.

When I did play WoW I mean WoG I did Miniatures only. and I like the idea of actually painting my own squadron up. So I may look at doing an Order to Skytrex, would like to see some samples from them...

well look forward to seeing what's new and hot for WoG. thx again for the warm welcomes

Along with all you missed on this forum (and it's both entertaning and informative, even if you don't play WOW/WOG), there's a new game the new owners (Ares) is coming out with: Sails of Glory Napoleonic ship action using the same sort of mechanices.

I really suggest you at least take a look at the Shapeways models up in the Hobby Section.
There is an amazing range of models available & you do not have to build them.
There will be many pics of the finished & painted models done by forum members to give an idea how they can come out.
They are pretty cheap in WSF finish (about 7 to 10 dollars for scouts) Postage is about $19 but you can get many models for that one charge.

If you're into painting your own planes... Shapeways produces more types than all other manufacturers put together now. There's at least three major designers on this forum, and they do do requests.

    These are all Shapeways

They mix and match with the Ares/Nexus planes very well.

@Willi Von Klugermann: sorry about that like I mentioned earlier its been over 2 years since I was last on. Give you some Idea I was the first wing commander of the New Zealand Wing. inbox has been cleared so msg away good sir.

@Zoe Brain: I'd love to do an order via shapeways it just depends on the shipping costs. as they are only about $1NZD cheaper then Skytrex, [considering Skytrex are in the U.K I can pretty much expect 20% of the order to be added onto the order just to get it to me.] but what is the cost of postage from Shapeways?

    I am wanting:
    http://www.shapeways.com/model/26228...kker-dr-i.html
    http://www.shapeways.com/model/38252...kker-d-ii.html
    http://www.shapeways.com/model/40037...ith-camel.html.

So if any Kiwis are doing a shapeways order let me know. I need to do some research as to who fought who and which German squadron had the DRI and DRII and if I can find a squadron who did have these planes did they battle any allied squadron that flew the Camels?

    @Coog:Thx for the welcome.

$20 flat fee, regardless of number of models.

The D.II (not Dr.II) is a much earlier plane than either a Dr.I or Camel. 16Q1 to 16Q4. Opponents would be Nieuport 11,16,17, and DH.2.

If you look in the Files section, you'll see the Official Unofficial planes list, giving dates of service and stats for all 1/144 aircraft of WWI available to date.

    thx guys

after reviewing the "aircraft available" file I am leaning towards a squadron that has the following:

    Fokker D.VII Germany 17 Q4 18 Q4
    Fokker DR.1 Germany 17 Q4 18 Q4

so my options for the Allied forces are:

    Sopwith Camel Great Britain 17 Q3 18 Q4
    SPAD S.XIII France 17 Q2 18 Q4
    Nieuport 23 France 17 Q2 18 Q1

just not sure am I getting the right planes. Not sure I am getting my head around the time period. I really like those German planes just need two different allied planes to go against them. Over the Weekend I'll try and find a German squadron who fought with the DR.1 and D.VII planes. any suggestions on the allied planes.
I do like the Sopwith Camel just not sure of the mix [though it would't bother me if all of the allied planes were Camels.]

    Cheers

NB: forund the 73rd Squadron all equipped with Sopwith Camels by 1918, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._73_Squadron_RAF

mmmm I might talk to my brother inlaw he is welsh see what allied planes he likes from WWI and go from there.

Any Recommendations on what Bombers to take for the Germans and British forces? As I may want to do some bombing scenarios. a wing of two bombers escorted by D.vII or allied bombers supported by Sopwith Camels etc etc.

I really like the Gotha but which one? have no clue with regards to the Allies.

    Cheers

sorry for the double post but I think I got what I want for Shapeways order:

    [1x] 1/144 Fokker Dr.I
    [2x] 1/144 Fokker D.VII one-piece
    [1x] Aircraft- Gotha G.V Bomber (1/144th)

    [1x] 1/144 Handley Page O/400
    [3x] 1/144 Sopwith Camel

comes to around $125NZD including postage [if I can find some more kiwis interested in adding to the order the p&p will drop] total of 8 planes so I can do different sorties and scenarios. Plus some nice painting challenges for me. I also need to sort out some bases, flying pegs, flame/smoke markers, rules, cards, rulers etc etc ....

    this may take awhile arrgghhhh....

might have to do Ebay to clear some old junk out and see what funds I can amass to pay for my return into WoG.

    Cheers

I'd recommend looking at the Ares Gotha IV (masquerading as a V). Add the missing cabane and nacelle struts, and it's a nice model. The Shapeways one needs a bit of filling down of the nose, and filing WSF takes a very long time. With the Ares one you get a base too, so prices (if you buy from 12-7) are comparable.

For bombing in France, the Friedrichshafen G.III and G.IIIa are both very good models. I can also recommend both AEG G.IIIs too, though that one's considerably smaller.

This shows the Fr. G.IIIa along with an O/400.

thx Zoe I'll check out the 12-7 gotha.

I am just after what ever the cheapest option is, I thought Shapeways is better as the planes are way cheaper then trying to find any of the Series 1,2,3 or 4 below $40USD on Ebay.

    Cheers
    GreyWolf

NB: DAM those bombers are HUGE.... the o/400 is massive. I want one for the brits.

Er... let me introduce you to a thing called the Zeppelin Strachen. It is to an O/400 what an O/400 is to a Fr G.III.

And here's (from right to left) a Zepp, an O/400, an Ares Gotha G.IV, and an Fr G.IIIa

WTF that thing is beyond massive, how many engines did it have to get off the ground?. I bet it won't be a cheap mini to buy considering that the Gotha is $23NZD, and the o/400 is $28NZD from shapeways. that thing must be closer to $50NZD.

Not only that, but the only Shapeways one currently available is $65, and is less robust than most. It's the only Shapeways model I have that broke after a drop of 1 metre.

It's still in the repair shop, with the 7 broken/shattered struts replaced by steel wire. Drilling and working with WSF is much harder than metal, resin or plastic. I took the opportunity to add the upper wing gun positions, ladder etc. The forthcoming Shapeways one will have those as standard, and may be a bit cheaper.

The Skytrex one, being mostly resin, would possibly have suffered far worse, shattered wings etc, but this is a case where Skytrex should be given serious consideration as an alternative.

    Just another suggestion for you.
As Zoe mentioned dont forget to think of a SE5a Squadron. Specifically 56 Sqd. Included such pilots as James McCudden & Arthur Rhys-Davids. Mayberry, Broadberry, Muspratt etc. They were of course in the famous fight against Werner Voss in his Fok Dr.I plus they have some great squadron insignia.

Pic below of my McCudden "G" aircraft.

LOL still at $25GBP that is around $48NZD and with the 20% off its $38.20NZD

not cheap but then again its a massive mini.

I did look at the SE5a but I found the 73rd Squadron that was all Camel.

@gully_raker: did you have any good links regarding that squadron?

They're for gaming, not display. So effectively, yes. I only do it deliberately on the shapeways planes to show how non-fragile they are. I wouldn't do it (deliberately) on the Ares/Nexus planes, but keep some CA glue handy just in case.

The Zepp got damaged by an errant feline pushing it (and quite a lot more) off the kitchen table. Even before damage, it was obvious it was pretty fragile. Now that the cabane struts are steel, it's far more rigid and strong.

A bit of a relief that you don't do it deliberately as a rule.
I read somewhere a post by Kyte (that I can't find at the moment - the post, not Kyte) where he wrote something along the lines that he usually don't trust his better builds to players that aren't themselves modelers and knows to treat the little masterworks with some respect. My approach is something like that that - I try to build them so that they can take handling of a board gaming piece, but I sort of count on that they'll not be handled too roughly.

well thankfully our massive dog is an outside pet and we have no cats [the mutt would eat them] but I do have small hands that like to touch my things namely Master4 and Miss6

Miss6 is getting better but Master4 enjoys looking with his hands and not his eyes. Any tank, plane, or robot is drooled over by him and he itches to touch. found him dribbling over my 6mm German army a few weeks ago, [a heap of Panzer IV's, StuG III G's, Tiger I's and Panther's] but he had his hands behind his back and was holding on to them. yet he was so wanting to pick them up and make tank noises. Then again who wouldn't want to make tank noises.
