Default Mission 7: Catch Me If You Can! (Central Powers - Blackronin)

"Don't get out of the bed, Ltn. Joachim, I'm only here to hear your report. But only if you are able to do it." "No problem, Herr Hauptmann Gabriel. I can give you my report." "Good! I've brought schnapps to keep us warm." "Danke!" "So please do start when you feel ready to." "Well, Herr Hauptmann, you know that things were pretty uncertain in these last few days. I was ordered to go up and escort a two-seater with a pilot from another Jasta, with the elusive mission of recovering an observer that had very important informations."

"Yes, I know, a very odd business. Go on." "And so, in the very foggy morning we went in. We were briefed that the skies were full of French planes and that the enemy had dispatched several armoured cars to capture our observer. We were fast to take off."

"We were almost reaching the observer's position when we saw two French birds coming our way." "And what have you done?" "I sent him ahead and rushed into the French's direction. In the ground..." "Yes?"

"Almost hidden in the morning fog, we could see the silhouette of two, maybe more armoured cars."

"And the Observer?" "Our man gave us signs with a mirror from inside a farmhouse. But the cars were moving steadily in his direction."

"I left the company of the two-seater, praying that he could save the observer in time and headed against the Spads. Thirteen. Fast birds..." "They came in your direction? None of them tried to follow the two-seater?"

"No." I guess that they weren't aware of what we were doing there. They were just patrolling, I guess." "I see." "We met face to face and I was able to stay away from one of them."

"We fired at each other at long range and I felt the impact of his bullets, while I fired back with a solid punch."

"He hit my rudder, and it jammed, but I had no intention of turning so I let myself go getting ready for an Immelmann.

"I could see the two seated getting away and that was enough for me at the time." "So both the two Spads kept engaged with you?" "Yes. But I was on their tails so I was confident that I would give time to the other pilot to rescue the observer."

"I kept tailing and firing against the Spad I've previously hit." "And the other one?" "he tried to shake me off, but I kept my attention in the wounded bird."

"I felt that if I could bring it down, thing would be better and we would be able to save the observer. But the Spads are tough planes."

"The second Spad tried to protect his comrade and made a pass against me." "Did he hit you?" "No. It was a very clumsy passage and I kept pressing the other Spad."

"I was certain that I hit the pilot at some point. The plane shook in a strange way and I felt that he had lost grip." "And he went down?" "No. By the contrary. He was very brave, I guess..." "Why?"

"He made an Immelmann to face me. His plane was in shatters by that time. Still... he made it."

"He even hit me with a solid punch. My Albatros shook from the the amount of damage. I fired back at him. It was sad."

"Sad?" "I think that I killed him with my last birst..." "I see. Drink." "Ah yes." "And the two seater?"

"I only had time to look at him from time to time, as I was facing two Spads. But I'm afraid that he tried to see where the armoured cars were in the fog..." "Why do you say that?"

"I saw him making a turn around the farmhouse. I think that he was trying to find a good spot to land away from the cars." "And what happened?" "He dove into the fog, firing against the car. They fired back."

"I start to understand..." "Mmmm... yes. He got so close that both cars had an ample opportunity to keep firing on him. With terrible consequences..."

"Did he survive?!" "I don't know... He was very low..."

"And you?" "I was engaged with the other Spad. I had to shake him off fast, if I was to be of any help to the observer..."

"I fired my first round against him and I hit him, but it wasn't enough."

"Meanwhile the cars were getting near the farmhouse and I saw the observer running away from them, trying to gain some time."

"I charged against the Spad and my open attack must have scared him as he was only trying to avoid me."

"I fired again, this time hitting him hard."

"After hitting him again I understood that he was running away. I felt the urge to pursuit him, but I had to go back and try to rescue the observer."

"My only option was to destroy or scare away the armoured cars. I dove in their direction."

I opened fire and I hit squarely the first one, whom shot back at me with no result." "That was a terrible risk you took there." "I saw no other option."

"Then the other was at range and they both fired at me, hitting me hard, but I destroyed one of them."

"I turned sharply right under a trail of bullets and I went for an Immelmann."

"I came blazing against the second car and his machine-guns fired back at me."

"I had to take him out. I had to take him out but for a second there I thought that I would die there."

"I felt bullets hit my plane's engine and the scream of the plane. But I was lucky enough to destroy the second armoured car."

"I eased the throttle and landed near the observer."

"I was able to take off with him behind my seat and we crash-landed in the 'drome. And here am I." "Very well. Thank you Ltn. Joachim. Rest for now. All in all, you've done well." "Thank you Herr Hauptmann Gabriel."

    Final Notes
I've played the mission some weeks ago, but only now was I able to upload it. I've played the 8th mission today and I'll upload it tomorrow.

Mission Result: Central Powers Victory. I haven't played it with all the rules from the scenario but I think that I've played it in the spirit of the mission.

    Kills, Casualties and Damage:
Ltn. Joachim Marseille - 1 Kills (Has now 8 kills. 7 planes and 1 balloon.)

The second Spad escaped with some damage:

Nice AAR Joaquim - You probably shouldn't have lost the Rumpler as the Armoured cars could only engage you at long range when flying, however, I did like to see the scout pick up option which would not have happened if you hadn't. That was my plan B if I'd lost my 2 seater ! I was surprised you chose not to use Kohn & Zimmerman in the mission but maybe just as well you didn't !
Good to see you back over the trenches my friend - I'm looking forward to mission 8 now !

    Very good AAR.

What are the armoured cars and what scale?

Thanks Dave. When I played this mission I was under a lot of stress and only when I was writing it down I saw that I've missed one or two very important rules in this wonderful mission. But I liked the outcome, so I left it the way it happened. I didn't use any other pilot as I was playing out of the time, I decided not to change the continuum of time.

Thanks Sean. The cars are Italian WW2 armoured cars, from A&A and they are 1:100 (15mm). They were the closest I have for WW1 1/144 ground vehicles.

I remember stress Joaquim - usually caused by nasty little jobsworths who don't have a clue how to do your job - I found this helped !

Oh yes, Dave! That helps a lot. I think that I'll print it and put it in my desk at work!

Quim! You are back!!! Thanks for sharing the AAR! My Goodness, -----------at last!

It's so late tonight I can not read it as carefully as I want to (frankly I spent the whole evening playing Dust Tactics with my buddy drinking Budweiser...).
Hope to read it carefully tomorrow!

    Very entertaining scenario Quim.
You have hit the nail on the head when you say "In the spirit of the game".
i think we can all loosen up a bit and play more for the story line rather than exactly what is in the rules. As long as it does not effect the overall flow of the campaign, I can bear with that.

Thanks Rob. This mission was such an effort to me. I wanted to play it. I had painted a new playing mat. But work and stress kept me from playing it, and when I finally did, it was with a terrible incapacity to focus completely. So I just let the game flow trying to have fun and not worry about trivial things. In these 2 months (!!!) Inęs was always saying, "why don't you relax and play a solo game with your planes?", but it was very difficult to. But now I'll play a lot of scenarios in a row.

Very good report, Quim "in the spirtit of thr game", as Rob pointed out. Yeah, this mission may cause a headache, but it's very entertaining/brain burning.
It could have been a risky decision of yours to land near the observer, while the cars were firing, so eliminating them first was wise
Waiting to read the next AAR

Thanks, dear friend. The 8th mission is already uploaded. Next week, the ninth and tenth, I hope. And then I'll be back on schedule!
