Thread: Righto chums, time to put on the anorak

Default Righto chums, time to put on the anorak

I've been buying a few postcards on EvilBay relating to WW1 aviation, and picked up this sorry looking specimen

Anybody got a clue what it might be? It looks like the result of an illicit liaison between a Sopwith and a Nieuport in the back of the Bessonneau hangar (a note on the back of the card says it's a Nieuport 28!!!). No prizes for coming up with the answer, just my undying gratitude.

Just to give you lot a fair chance I've timed this so Zoe and the rest of the Antipodean contingent should be beddy-byes

If you want to mooch through the rest of the cards, they are here:

Well Steve the Fuselarge certainly looks N.28 but the Wings?????
Never seen anything like them & the Tail looks Sopwith not Nieuport.
Should be worth posting over on the Aerodrome Historical Forum & the Great War in the Air Forum.

It also looks to have an observers cockpit, which makes it look a bit 1 1/2 Strutter-ish (without the cabane struts)

"Ah yes! This is a... ahhhh... mmmm..."

Looks sharply to the plane until his head starts to ache.

"Oohhhhh Zoe.... Dear Zoe.... Can you come here please?....

Baldrick wins the cookie - it's a LeO 4. The Strutter resemblance on the fuselage may have something to do with the LeO 1 having been a license-built Strutter....

"premičre production des établissements Lioré et Olivier pendant la Grande Guerre, le LeO-4, extrapolé du Sopwith 1 112 H Strutter ť, ne fut pas retenu par les services techniques de l'armée"

Roughly translates as: "first production establishments Lioré et Olivier during the great war, LeO-4, extrapolated from Sopwith 1 1/2 H Strutter", was not accepted by the technical services of l' army"

There was also an LeO-4/1, using a similar (if not the same) airframe but fitted with conventional wings and a triangular tailplane. It wasn't a success either!

    Can't think why

Well done Balders, a demonstration of anoraking par excellence

Interesting, didn't know L&O were making really god-awful aircraft as far back as WW1

I can now change the name in my album to "Leo 4" from "buggeredifiknow"

A bit harsh, given that the LeO451 was probably the most successful medium bomber in the Battle of France, and soldiered on into the late 1950s. I've got 3 of them in 1/144 for CY6! That said, there were certainly some ugly and poor-to-mediocre products prior to it!

I'll see your LeO 451 and raise you a LeO 406

Definitely fits the 'ugly and poor-to-mediocre' category!
