Steve - your 109s are absolutely lovely! and Darell, your Es are splendid, too - since I've acquired a 'Balthasar' I have my eye on repaints and getting some AIM later war models...

    G'day All!
Here are some pics of my humble efforts at painting up 2 AIM Messers loosely based on a Ju 26 scheme which had red noses &/or tail fins.
Just need to coat with matt varnish to seal the decals.

Default WGS Battle of Britain - 1/200 Nexus III./JG26 Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4

With the new Battle of Britain starter on the horizon I decided to repaint my WGS duplicates.

This is my second Galland Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 repainted as the aircraft of the Technical Officer assigned to the Stab of Gruppe III, Jagdgeschwader 26 'Schlageter'. First step was painting out Galland's rudder kill markings with Tamiya flat yellow. Then I painted out the Mickey Mouse insignias and the first bar of Galland's Gruppenkommandeur insignia, matching the fuselage colour with a mix of 2 parts Humbrol Matt 65 Sky and 1 part Tamiya RLM Grey. Tamiya RLM Grey also matches the lower fuselage camouflage. I then applied the Technical officer decals from 1/144 Direct on each side of the fuselage just behind the chevron.

At the time Major Adolf Galland was the Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG26 the Technical Officer was Oberleutnant Walter Horten. One of the Horten brothers famous for their revolutionary flying wing aircraft designs, Walter Horten had been serving with JG26 since 1936 and was appointed as Technical Officer on 14 December 1939. During the Battle of Britain he often flew as wingman for Adolf Galland. From August to September 1940 Horten was credited with seven victories - two Defiants, two Spitfires and three Hurricanes - before being grounded as were all the Technical Officers. By the end of 1940, Walter Horten was promoted to Hauptmann and appointed commander of III./JG26 before moving back to aircraft design. Following WW2 he joined the Bundeswehr, retiring as an Oberstleutnant. Walter Horten passed away in Baden-Baden at the age of 85 on 9 December 1998.

Excellent historical repaints, Carl. Thanks for the insight. What I admire the most are the colours you managed to mix and merge. To my taste they are true to original, especially 02 grey, which is pretty hard to obtain as a mixture. The mottling - if my eyes do not misguide me - is also retouched. Well done!

Good eye Andrzej. I was lucky that the original mottling on the lower fuselage was exactly matched by the Tamiya RLM Grey. As you say it was the fuselage RLM 02 grey-green that required some experimentation!

Great work Carl, and very useful to me for the future as I have also to change a couple of Gallands to accompanying aircraft sooner or later too.

I have three Balthasars (of which I simply renumbered the others White 2 and 3) the two Gallands depicted here and a single Mölders. I wish I had bought more Nexus 109s as they soon became scarce.

I won't be making the same mistake this time
