Thread: Official Albatros D.Va painting thread.

One more J26 Albatros. He missed out from flying at Origins. He was the last plane to be finished. When I put on the final clear flat spray and left it outside to dry it decided to rain! The rain must have only lasted a few seconds as I didn't even notice. When I went out to retrieve it the finish was all foggy! Sunday the weather was clear so I gave it another quick clear spray and the fog thankfully is now gone.

Probably the large X on the fuselage means "deleted." You should have just left it with me
Gorgeous plane, and that Peter Pig pilot looks great!

I think I smell the salt air of the North Sea. Great model and the yellow really pops.

Thanks, guys They can be a bit exacting with the stippling and lozenge decals but pretty happy with this one. I made the fuselage decal by scanning a 1/72 Peddinghaus set then resizing to 144. It worked ok, still a bit of overlap on the belly.
@craig - yes, my new favorite yellow, AK Interactive 3rd Gen Deep Yellow. It's been tough to find a rich yellow that has decent coverage as most yellows are pretty transparent but it's great.

With your painting/decaling skills I am not sure why you need to buy any of Daryl's full-colour prints ...

    Amazing work.

    Amazing work.
    He hasn't complained so far
Nothing beats the great feeling of getting your own custom planes on the table but since I don't think I'll make it to the ripe old age of 187, Daryl's planes speed things along beautifully. Seefrosta's Poss will be a color shapeways in the Origins scenario.
    Thanks, Pete

Yet another outstanding model Chris. I used to take my decals and sometimes cammo from books and then resize to fit the model. It could certainly take up some time to get them exactly correct especially on a tapering body. Itake my hat off to you sir.

    Rob.
Thanks, Rob. I tried to interest two decal makers in a Seefrosta project since it's a colorful unit with a (now) nicely documented history and numerous detailed encounters with our "wings" aircraft but one declined and the other seems to have abandoned it.
I've made a lot of homemade decals from the profiles, some good, some not so good, but the fuselage tapered "ribbons" are a pain with the varied geometry and working from a 2D image to augment more material for the wrap. There are more 1/72 and 1/48 decals out there for Seefrosta that I could resize but they're for planes I've already finished lol. Plus, that mainly works by printing on white decal paper then trimming the image if not too complex a shape.

But there are a couple of D.VII's that beckon

Here is a Shapeways Alb DVa. Been wanting to do this one ever since the Jasta Colors Vol 1 came out back in 2020. Finally bumped it to the top of the painting queue.

Pg 147 of Jasta Colors, Max Muller, Jasta 28, September 1917. When the Staffelfuhrer was killed in action, Muller then led the Staffel. He painted his plane red for recognition.

Decals - Aviation Wings, Paints, wingtops Craftsmart Olive Green and Vallejo Game Color Hexed Lichen. Underwings Anitas Morning Blue 11064. Elevator Vallejo Flat Yellow 015. Fuselage Anitas Dark Red 11020.
Wheel covers Anitas Khaki Green 11117.

I committed a mortal sin with the decals. With the comet on the left side I brain farted. When it was on the wet paper towel and curled up I very stupidly flattened it out. When it was ready to apply and I tried to remove it from the paper it shredded! Too much effort was put in to reconstruct it on the fuselage. A bit of touch up with paint was necessary to salvage it.

I see I didn't take a detailed photo of the left side...I'll ad one in.

Here is the left fuselage. Not as clean as the right! Why did I ruin the decal!?!?!? Might have to go back and try to clean it up a bit more.

    Another real beauty, Peter
Many anguished phrases are still echoing off the turquoise-splattered walls at my house as a result of the last remaining decal messing up.
Would it be so difficult to provide an extra on the sheet lol?
Nice save - I'd say looks good. On to the next!

    Beautiful paintjob, Peter.
And obviously, you gave all the surfaces a thorough priming.

    Thanks Guys.

Eric, I prime with black so the red took 3 coats(!) to look like it does.

I dunno, but I can't see the imperfections for the decal on the left side. All looks grand to me.
