She was in the vanguard of the island-hopping campaign of 1944, using the P-47's ruggedness for low-level close support work.

On June 22, 1944 twenty four P-47D Thunderbolts of the 19th Squadron were launched from the escort carrier USS Natoma Bay to land on the Aslito field on Saipan. First plane to touch the ground was flown by Capt. Harry E. McAfee. These planes immediately went into action in support of the Marines fighting well entrenched and determined Japanese troops.

On June 24th, McAfee and another pilot guided Marines ashore on Tinian. They flew almost at the wave top level over the landing craft towards the beach, turned, and flew again and again guiding the boats to exactly where they supposed to land on path finding sweeps.

When the island was captured on July 31st, Major McAfee became the first American pilot to land on Tinian.

A bit about the mini as well please, Steve!
It looks really great, but is it a repaint, kit, 1/144 or 1/200? - That sort of thing.
(Sorry, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to the WWII stuff.)

It looks like a 1:200 New Ray model of the P-47.

Here is a link on the site:

Sorry for missing information. It is a repaint of the New Ray Tarheel Hal 1:200 model of the P-47. I used Testors paint, mainly Olive Drab. This is one of the extra P47 models I got from the Hobby Lobby stores. I am still looking for more of them in the stores. However, I may have to go to the Air 200 model route. I am happy for once, my recent painting is turning out half way decent.

She looks great! Have you had any luck finding the New Ray models lately? Except for those darn white Migs, I haven't found anything in any of the local Hobby Lobbies for months.

I have been seeing quite a few of Corsairs, Hellcats, and Thunderbolts at the Hobby Lobbys around Houston and Dallas if you ever go there. P-38s are hard to find. They had two Corsairs at the one here in Tyler for a long time, but they were gone when I was there yesterday. However there was a P-38 there and I added to my ever growing collection of them.

The Blue Ray planes i have 2 D.520`s came from an aviation museum gift shop. On my last trip to Air Force Museum two years ago they had several of all the planes. If there is a museum in your area give them a visit! The D.520 is almost dead on to 144 scale.
