Tutschek served in the German army on both the western and eastern front. At the battle of Verdun, however, Tutschek was severely wounded in a gas attack and required months of recovery time.

Upon his return he was assigned to Air Force and after training was re-assigned to Jasta Boelke in which he flew a scout plane. After just 3 victories with the unit he was given command of Jasta 12 in April of 1917.

Tutschek was again severely injured when Charles Booker shot him through the shoulder. During his recovery he wrote his book, "Sturme and Luftsiege." He returned to combat in February of 1918 in just 43 days later was killed in action by South African ace Harold Redler in his S.E.5.

It was, just prior to his death, however, on the 1st of March 1918 that Tutschek shot down his 3rd balloon of the war.
