Flash - Gun Ho - over The Trenches - Mission 9 - Part 1
Luke Wright-Rownde was thrilled when the C.O. selected him for the escort mission. He’d been with the squadron for a couple of weeks now but was yet to see any action and had spent the time getting to know his SE5a and getting his hours up under the tutelage of various squadron members. His job was quite straight forward: he was to escort MacGlassop & Dowd – for some reason known as the Celtic Collective - across the lines on a photo recce of a number of locations. Though who was escorting who he wasn’t quite sure as ‘The Collective’ had looked a rum pair all togged up beside their Brisfit.
Ten minutes later they were flying over the lines –
as they did so Jerries hove into view from their left and right front; the Brisfit waggled its wings and zig-zagged towards its first target.
Luke saw an Albatros & Pfalz at his ten & eleven o’clock and decided he should run in & then hook behind them to protect his charge. All went well until he hooked too early and the Pfalz slid in on his front quarter and perforated his beautiful SE at close range.
Shaken by this event he broke hard right to shake off the Pfalz.
Meanwhile the Collective had neatly side-stepped the incoming Albatros & snapped their first picture..
.. then pulled round behind Luke as they by-passed the second target, reasoning, correctly, that if they got the next two they could leave this one.
The Albatros they’d side-stepped let them know he was going to be a problem by turning in and landing a long range burst on them but no damage was apparent so they turned for their third target.
They snapped their second pic with the Albatros hard on their heels but too close to get a decent shot in – as they parted company Dowd gave him an ineffectual squirt with the Lewis which promptly jammed.
Luke completed his turn and spotted the Pfalz pulling out of an Immelmann, stalling he caught it as it turned into him and they exchanged fire – taking no damage himself Luke was rewarded by a puff of smoke from the Pfalz as it staggered under the combined Vickers/Lewis fire.
A second Albatros had circled in on the tail of The Collectives Brisfit landing a couple of damaging long range bursts as they got their third and final picture and turned for home.
As they raced back across the lines with the Albatrii in pursuit Luke, still wary of the lurking Pfalz, cheekily managed to hit one at close range
before bursting between them and diving for home himself leaving them scattered about the sky in confusion.

"Bloody typical" grumbles MacGlassop, "risked our necks on the other two for no reason !"
"Bugger." said Dowd with a grin.
So far so good - I will have to read up on AA rules again to refresh my memory then it's on to part deux !
Terrific scenario Rob
