    Flash - Gun Ho - over The Trenches - Mission 9 - Part 1

Luke Wright-Rownde was thrilled when the C.O. selected him for the escort mission. He’d been with the squadron for a couple of weeks now but was yet to see any action and had spent the time getting to know his SE5a and getting his hours up under the tutelage of various squadron members. His job was quite straight forward: he was to escort MacGlassop & Dowd – for some reason known as the Celtic Collective - across the lines on a photo recce of a number of locations. Though who was escorting who he wasn’t quite sure as ‘The Collective’ had looked a rum pair all togged up beside their Brisfit.
Ten minutes later they were flying over the lines –

as they did so Jerries hove into view from their left and right front; the Brisfit waggled its wings and zig-zagged towards its first target.
Luke saw an Albatros & Pfalz at his ten & eleven o’clock and decided he should run in & then hook behind them to protect his charge. All went well until he hooked too early and the Pfalz slid in on his front quarter and perforated his beautiful SE at close range.

Shaken by this event he broke hard right to shake off the Pfalz.
Meanwhile the Collective had neatly side-stepped the incoming Albatros & snapped their first picture..

.. then pulled round behind Luke as they by-passed the second target, reasoning, correctly, that if they got the next two they could leave this one.
The Albatros they’d side-stepped let them know he was going to be a problem by turning in and landing a long range burst on them but no damage was apparent so they turned for their third target.

They snapped their second pic with the Albatros hard on their heels but too close to get a decent shot in – as they parted company Dowd gave him an ineffectual squirt with the Lewis which promptly jammed.

Luke completed his turn and spotted the Pfalz pulling out of an Immelmann, stalling he caught it as it turned into him and they exchanged fire – taking no damage himself Luke was rewarded by a puff of smoke from the Pfalz as it staggered under the combined Vickers/Lewis fire.

A second Albatros had circled in on the tail of The Collectives Brisfit landing a couple of damaging long range bursts as they got their third and final picture and turned for home.

On examination of the photo plates back at the 'drome the gun has been located at the first target area visited by the Collective...
"Bloody typical" grumbles MacGlassop, "risked our necks on the other two for no reason !"
"Bugger." said Dowd with a grin.

So far so good - I will have to read up on AA rules again to refresh my memory then it's on to part deux !
    Terrific scenario Rob

Luke & the Collective did a great job, Dave. Two quick planes - perfect recon!

I'm lucky that they located Berta and are able to throw her a big load on the head.

That was smart, Dave! A very satisfying result for the Bulldogs, I must admit. Hope the defenders and archie will combine their fire and improve this outcome slightly in Eagles favour

I have been reading up on the flak rules Andrzej - I will be using the solitaire play rules but they could be devastating ! C'est le Guerre, now it's in the hands of the wargames gods and the turn of a few cards !

Wait, wait, Dave! Rob proposed his own quite reasonable solution for AA fire in his mission briefing - with dice. I must look for it in his thread...

Too late !! Played it right after I signed off.

Hope you crushed this gun, Dave.

    Mission 9 Part Deux

Deciding that Brisfits can look after themselves the C.O. had them bombed up and sent The Collective straight back out with Shute & Lowe following to silence big Bertha.

As they passed into enemy territory the Hun aircraft appeared at their 1, 2 & 4 o’clock. Boring in on the target MacGlassop quickly realised he had over-cooked it and held onto his eggs, dodging flak as he went, however, his actions gave the que for Shute who was following close behind.

As they passed over the target a Pfalz roared in clattering them with a long range burst – Dowd, quick as you like, returned fire and was rewarded by seeing the pilots head jerk back. “That’s put paid to him” he thought.

    Well done Dave!

A perfect run with the Bristol Fighters.

Big Berta is history - even the Reservestaffel pilots made it home again without losses.

    Ok, Kleins is wounded...

If I'd been playing on my full size table Wiencke would have been toast !! So close to finishing him off; I think Shute/Lowe may have picked up the spare as they left the board on the next turn but I stopped it there wrongly thinking that Dowd had splashed him. Next time he may not be so lucky

Job done! Well done those chaps.

Great action, fast moving story, and surgical strike. Please join me in the Mess for a few jars this evening Squadron Leader.

Well done, no doubt about it, Dave. Very good report with nice pictures. Your mission was almost totally bloodless. No shot down planes in any part of it.
Prepare for my horrific AAR...I couldn't sleep well tonight, after that night recon mission, I swear...
The Eagles will remember it. And the Bulldogs as well.

Good conclusion Sven. This was the most brutal mission in this campaign. I'm writing an AAR...
