Thread: 1:200 Shapeways Models?

    Default 1:200 Shapeways Models?

While I know I'm likely in the minority for this opinion, I really like the WWII timeframe of Wings of Glory.

I know that there are quite a number of metal miniature manufacturers that make 1:200-scale aircraft, there do not seem to be many Shapeways folks who do WWII aircraft.

Any thoughts as to why this might be?

...and are there folks that accept Shapeways commissions for work?

Kampfflieger (Roman) does do some 1/200 WW2 aircraft see, http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...artin-Maryland and:
    1/200 Messerschmitt BF-109F
    1/200 Junkers EF 128
    1/200 Blohm und Voss P.212.03
    1/200 Junkers EF 112
    1/200 Blohm und Voss Ha-139 (I do a 1/144 version in resin!)
    1/200 Westland Whirlwind
    1/200 Dewoitine D.520 (x2)
    1/200 Martin Maryland (wheels optional)

    1/300 P-61 Black Widow
    1/300 Blohm und Voss P.212.03
    1/300 Blohm und Voss Ha-139

    1/144 Blohm und Voss P.212.03
1/144 Blohm und Voss P.212.03 (closed wheels)
    1/144 Junkers EF 128
1/144 Junkers EF 128 (closed wheels)
    1/144 Fw-56 Stosser
    1/144 Henschel Hs-126
    1/144 Martin Maryland (wheels optional)

He is open to requests for shapeways stuff. Roman does all my Gold series masters for resin casting (not shapeways as the resolution is not there for using them as masters).

Yes, I'd already found Roman's excellent work on Shapeways, and it left me wanting more for my "Project Finland" ideas.

I'll contact him through Shapeways' messaging system. Thanks!

    pbhawkin is peter's planes. www.petersplanes.com

I don't think he feels right about advertising his own company on this site as he's not a sponsor - so I won't advertise it either, merely inform those interested in 1/144 aircraft that he has some unusual ones available.

While we're at it - another 1/200 aircraft not on the list, as it's by none of the usual suspects. The Martin B-10.

    And another, the Horten/Gotha 229

    The Bf110 by Colinwe(2 planes)

    Thanks for that Zoe.
As I am making my FIRST 1/200 scale planes (Blenheim Mk.I and Mk.IV) I suppose I should ask someone about sponsorship!

AND what is the maerial the Ho229 is made out of? It says WSF BUT the images certainly show a Beige smooth finish and if this is a new material it may be the improvement that shapeways 3D printing needs in order to remove the graininess from the models! I can only hope!!

You might want to look at this thread:
    http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...Request-thread

I'm not sure the Shapeways technique is appropriate for this one, apart from the fuselage:

But a resin foam or hollow resin cast might be.

Personally, I'd really like a brace of 1/200 I-16s. The I-16 would be relatively easy to cast in resin. The Armaments in Miniature ones look good, but are metal, thus heavy, and postage from the UK high.

    Default 1:200 Martin Maryland

I have finally taken the plunge into Shapeways with an order for 2 1:200 scale Martin Maryland bombers &. 2 1:144 scale Airco DH5's, looking foward to adding them to the painting queue.

Thanks for all the replies and support on this, Gentlemen.

My nefarious plans for recreating some of the air battles of the Winter and Continuation War (without resorting to metal miniatures) is back in motion!

Lest anyone else wonder about a new artist, this is Kampfflieger.

Back on point, armaments in miniature has some 1/200 planes in resin (and a nice 1/144 Drachen). http://www.angelfire.com/nj4/armamen.../resin09mm.htm

David Schmid's AIM sculpts are fantastic, I rate his aircraft highly. I can't wait for his 'soon to be released' models, including the Polikarpov I-16, Macchi MC.200, Douglas A-20 and bunch of others.

In that case, you'll need some of these:

Also an essential for the initial stages of the Battle of France:

Also the escorting D-XXI’s were heavily attacked by German fighters. The 229, flown by Koos Roos became separated from his comrades and was attacked by three Me-110 fighters. After his plane was hit several times, Koos prepared to bail-out by releasing his seat straps and the cockpit canopy. To his great surprise, the canopy hit the engine of the pursuing Me-110 which went promptly down with a smoking engine! Koos discovered that he still had full control over his plane and he escaped in a cloud. When he came out, he was directly on the tail of the second Me-110. He immediately opened fire and saw the rear gunner collapse in his seat. Also this plane went down with a smoking engine.

Next, 229 were hit again and Koos lost his consciousness. Lucky for him, he was thrown out of his plane and when falling down he regained consciousness realizing that ‘he was feeling lots of fresh air’!

With his right arm paralyzed, he managed to open his parachute with his left arm with very little margin since he was very close to the ground when the parachute opened.

Koos came down near the place where the 229 had crashed badly bleeding with a broken right arm, bullets in his leg and 20mm shell fragments in his head and left shoulder.

"Soon" is flexible. They've had this status for a while, I believe.

Well, he already has the Brewster Buffalo available, so schoon can have his "sky pearl" right now.

I had an email from David yesterday, it looks like the I16 is about ready to roll, along with a PE2 and A20

When I did my Winter/Continuation War campaigns in 1/200 I got a lot of resin stuff from Ron Crawford at HBM. Sadly Ron has not been a well bunny over the years, and contact is a bit hit and miss (more miss than hit unfortunately) and it is difficult to order from him. This is a pity as his aircraft are superb.

I have to say that given the cost and quality issues of Shapeways, Dave Schmid or Ron would be my first port of call where possible.

The delivery man came this morning, no Series 5 WGF but my Shapeways delivery, two WGF Airco DH5 and two WGS Martin Maryland bombers.

These are my first Shapeways minis. I am very happy with the FUD finish, very little I need to do before priming.

As an observation on FUD I have a Fokker D.VII that is unp[ainted sitting on my desk for the last 3-4 months and have noted that the interior of the hollow fuselage has turned quite a bright Yellow! Only the interior mind you not the outer surface!?

I have several AIM minis at 1/200 scale and I'm very happy with them.
And they are cheaper than the Shapeways miniatures and I think with better finishing.
What do you - who had access to both - think about this?

Agreed. The finish of Dave's resin models is far superior to what Shapeways is chucking out at the moment. And yes, even factoring in postage it is cheaper ordering AIM's stuff from the States than it is buying Shapeways.

I also have purchased 22 of Dave Schmid's AIM models, here's just a few:

Shapeways are expensive - compare $24 each with postage for the Martin bombers with $9 each for the AIM Dorniers.

I agree with you Joaquim, I only buy Shapeways if I cannot source a particular miniature from other companies.

    Cheers,

    Carl.

    [Carl.
Nice looking models; where did you find the model holder, or is it homemade?
I'm using some old Micromark ones (OOP) but that one looks better.

As for Shapeways and AMT, I am not saying one company is better than the other it's just AMI models cost me less.

Glad to see you received your Maryland's! Mine was shown around at the convention last weekend. Very nice looking P-40`s. If i were doing 200 scale AIM models seem the right way to go. All i have seen look great!
