Reporting for duty after a long stretch in the stockade for errrr, well I'd rather not say actually.
Been so long out of action the name of the rules has changed, have the rules themselves changed much? Do I need to rush out and purchase another rule set or is WoW and WoG more or less the same rule set?

Welcome from north of Victoria. Lots north, actually from you. Vancouver Island, Canada. I am north of Victoria, British Columbia, as it happens.
Rules are pretty much the same, but there are some differences. Rules are available from the ARES site, and the Dual Pack rules cover the basics and standard rules [Link]. Good for a start, and if you have the original Wings of War boxed set, all the parts will work.
I have been Skype gaming with people all around the world, including Alastair [Doug] in Toowoomba. Perhaps we could get a game in this summer?

I've skimmed through the rules from link sent to me and I notice a couple of minor changes as mentioned so all looks good, BUT!
Are the firing decks all the same as before, A-D, same number of cards, same proportion of damage results, special damage etc?
Are manouver decks the same in make up or are there changes I need to know about? I have all the models and multiples of many types up to before the series that included the Eindecker etc, (which I am scouring the planet to add to my collection). So do I need to add/remove cards from some aircraft decks to make them legal again?
What is the current info regarding the larger bomber models, are Gothas being re released soon or is it all hope and speculation. With rules for bombers is Flight of Giants still the correct rule set to use or are there changes in the new rules I need to know about?
Are the Balloon rules the same?

I'll start searching for a full starter set soon. I was hoping it wasn't necessary to have to pick one up as I already have Famous Aces, Watch your Back, Burning Drachens, Flight of the Giants, Deluxe Starter, one of each balloon set and a Dr1/Camel Duel set on the way (I'll give that to my brother as a present and see if I can hook him into playing) That's already a stack of duplicated (redundant) counters and combat decks already. Rather spend the money on extra planes to tell you the truth . I'm currently having a splurge on early war as I missed out earlier and have found some good cheap sources I would like to milk dry while I can.
Are the card decks of the current miniatures of the Eindecker and the DH-2 correct?

I started in 2012, not knowing that Nexus had stopped producing Wings of War, and ran around Canada picking up pieces of the old stuff, cluttering up small gaming stores. I didn't get the new Rules until I stared trying to run Convention Events in Fall 2013.
However, the new rules are all in one book, and there are some small differences. The one I dislike the most is the "no straight maneuvers when on fire". Pretty much everything else is directly transferable for play. Like house rules. For maneuver packs, there are the above noted " new" decks for previously printed card planes. Not mentioned above is the Sopwith Triplane's new U Deck. Faster than the Dr.1, and different turns. If you know that new minis have been released, check to see if the maneuver deck is different, and that will be your clue that you need a new deck for previously released material. To date, no previously released mini has a new deck.

Hi Mike, I sort of got your meaning first time and I reckon we are on the same page. I have all my planes sorted into little plastic boxes by type, where each aircraft has its own compartment that includes its base, manoeuvre deck and aircraft card, I tend to keep my gaming bits carefully sorted (a bit anal I know) I have another box that contains a heap of extra manoeuvre decks that came in box sets, and expansion card decks which I can raid for swaps. All of my current collection except the two F2b's are of WoW vintage. I have noticed the different printing style between WoW and WoG decks but haven't had a chance to investigate any difference yet between, say, the F2b's S deck from the card set I bought years ago and the set that came with the new miniatures, although the later has a different "look" and a base line after the black arrow head.
My intention is to bring all old planes up to WoG standard, and if that means a shuffle of cards in or out cards from other decks then so be it. If I play a game where I need to re sort the decks back to WoW standard then that exercise will only take a few minutes to do as I have a WoW master card list I can refer to if needed.

:D Trev you might want to take a look at the Official/Unofficial Aircraft thread down in the WW1 section to see all the decks allocated to non Nexus/Ares aircraft. This includes Red Eagle, Shapeways etc. The Committee did such a great job that Angelio adopted some of our recommendations for the changes between Cards & Minis.;)Quote:

Hold off on that WoG Standard thing. ARES is not selling separate Maneuver Decks, like Nexus. The ARES business model is to sell minis, and that is the only way to get maneuver decks from them, at least for now. Buying a bunch of minis, and using only the "A" decks from ARES minis when playing a game, whether using Nexus, ARES or other home-built minis could be done, but it will not be cost effective. I have a few paper planes I build, waiting for reasonably priced minis to make it to market. I am using the boxed set of maneuver decks to put them on the game board, now. I actually like the old cards better. And using the two brands is less confusing on the gaming table. I have five Sopwith Triplanes painted up as Collishaw's Black Flight, and any time it has been on the table has been a confusing mess with which card goes with which plane while playing, let alone the clean-up afterward. I turned fifty this year and through a big party and my wife new I was getting my workshop/games room sorted out. The lovely arranged for most guests to give me Bunnings cards as presents and I ended up getting $650 worth, spent it all on the final shevles and cupboards and had some left over for a stack of clear plastic boxes with dividers. I spent Easter sorting out all the storage for my X-wing and WoG minis among other the stuff I game. Everything storage wise is now uniform and my next step is to get a labeler to finish off the "Batcave look!
I've got flights of (6) DVII's, Sopwith Snipes AFC No 1 Squadron, Sopwith Camels AFC (fictional) Squadron. All care of Doms' Decals. I want to make up a flight of AFC F2b's next, but that will be after I tinker with Fokker EIII's vs DH-2's
I work in the Aged and Disability field running activities for my clients. I occasionally use my wargaming collections as part of 3D information sessions I run regarding Military History. I used some WoG planes and balloons on Thursday to explain the evolution of aerial warfare in WW1 all laid out on a large printed and laminated photomap I downloaded from here years ago. Doing the sessions my way blows them away when they see all the little minis on the table, far more interesting the pictures from a book.

Thanks for the words of encouragement gully_raker! Its great having 3D miniatures of the likes WoG mini's, they are fairly robust in construction and large enough to see for those with failing eye sight. Also some of the types are recognisable by some folks ie "do you have the Red Baron?" and when they see the size of a Dr1 compared to a Sopwith Camel, compared to a DH-4, then compared to an observation balloon, the penny starts to click with them how "dangerous" it was to fly back then. I also take along some 1/144 WW2 fighters and Bombers like Spitfires and Lancasters and they can see the progression of shape and size.
I enjoy displaying the models when I get the opportunities and I'm sure my clients get a brief buzz when "Trevor brings along his little aeroplanes"
