After a fantastic three days of WGS gaming over the Australia Day long weekend Tuesday morning 29 January 2013 saw me back on the road early. I was intending to drive the 1260km from Canberra to my home in Brisbane in one day - and I almost made it too!
On the way however I stopped to visit the scene of a terrible wartime tragedy which occurred on 5 August 1944 at the little NSW country town of Cowra.

Moving on from the 'Air Power in the Pacific' exhibit you enter the ANZAC Hall featuring aircraft of WW2 in Europe.
The Avro Lancaster B1 'G for George' takes pride of place here.

As I made good time on Day 1 of the Brisbane to Canberra trip I had time for a detour to the small town of Temora on Day 2. Temora is the home of the Temora Aviation Museum, home to the No. 10 Elementary Flying Training School (10 EFTS) set up by the RAAF in May 1941 under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) during the Second World War. Their website is here: http://www.aviationmuseum.com.au/
I left Brisbane at 1000hrs and made good time, doing the 950 kilometres to the central NSW city of Dubbo in just over 12 hours.
I took a few photos on the first leg of my trip through the rural plains of central NSW:
Cows enjoying the shade of a street sign outside Warwick
Grey skies on the road to Goondiwindi - an ominous portent of the weather related obstacles I would strike
