After a good sleep, I woke up in the morning and the good spirit of the Opole HQ served us a wonderful rich breakfast to be fit for a trip to Krakau, the old cultural capital city of Poland.
On our way, Andrzej left the road for a first secret mission target. In the town of Otmice/Ottmütz he showed me the remains of a former Luftwaffe airfield.

A historical place from where the German Luftwaffe started attacks versus Poland in September 1939.
After 1939 the airfield (called: Stubendorf) was extended and contained the following units until the end of the war. Nightfighters operated from this airfield!

Stab/Fernaufklärungsgruppe 3
2./Aufklärungs-Gruppe (F)11
2./Aufklärungs-Gruppe (F)100
1. (H) und 4. (H) / Aufklärungsgruppe 41
II./Nachtjagdgeschwader 5
IV./Nachtjagdgeschwader 5
II./Nachtjagdgeschwader 5
III./Nachtjagdgeschwader 102
Schlachtgeschwader 111
1./Nachtschlachtgruppe 5
2./Nachtschlachtgruppe 10
14.(Eis)/Kampfgeschwader 27

Ersatztruppenteile

Flugzeugführerschule A/B 110
Blindflugschule 11
Stab und I. / Schlachtgeschwader 111

We had a short walk on the remains oft he airfield and Andrzej told be about stuff he found and discovered in his youth there.

Excellent secret mission!

2 hours later we arrived in the Polish museum of Aviation in Krakau.

Especially the WW I section was interesting. A wonderful setup around “really” unique planes of the Great War. All planes were surrounded by paintings to create a special atmosphere. That doubles the effect of those old machines on any visitor.

Here you can see a Halberstadt CL.II of the HQ of the Luftstreitkräfte.

Inspecting some exhibits of the American Expedition Force.

A part of a Nieuport plane shot down by Leutnant von Adam /Jasta 6 at July 28th 1917.

A wall painting with Breguet two-seaters.

An Entente Officer’s Club.

Someone wasn’t a fan of the A-H Empire.

This was a painting on the wall of a room with an original Zeppelin Staaken engine gondola.

Where is our KS heavy bomber order now?

Nightbomber watching the gondola and said: “Where can you see and get in touch with such a piece of history?”.

The exhibition is really unique because it was part of fat Hermann’s collection that he tried to save from Allied bombing raids in Berlin and transferred it to Krakau.

The Polish government took good care of the planes and gave them an extraordinary presentation.

Wrong bar for a Luftstreitkräfte pilot, but I don’t care.

Where is my beer and the Schnaps?

Last room with a connection to the young Polish airforce that was founded after WW I.

Luftstreitkräfte planes were repainted.

Polish officers were sent to England to buy planes for the fight versus the Soviets and other countries that try again to grab a piece of Polish ground.

We enjoyed a short walk outside the hangars and inspected one Ju52 and some Jetfighters of the Korean War, Cold War and Warschauer Pakt forces.

Unfortunately we hadn’t that much time so we took only a short look into the main hangar with some interesting planes like the only existent original PZL P.11 or a replica of a Bristol Fighter with Polish markings.

We had a really good time in this museum.

You can see it.

We continued or trip and drove into the old town of Krakau. During an interesting search for a parking place I get a first impression of the city.

At last we walked into the old city and headed for the market place.

I can’t tell you all the stories that Andrzej told me about the city where he did his studies. He showed me so much wonderful and impressing places and took a short stop in his former favorite local pub.

This one kept it’s outfit until the beginning of the 20th century. Artists gave their pictures to the pub to pay for the drinks they had.

There you can taste a real pre-WW I atmosphere. Krakau belonged to the A-H Empire during this years and was the capital of Galicia.

Thank God that this citiy wasn’t destroyed during WW II like so many other European ones. If you ever make a trip to Poland you have to visit Krakau - a true jewel!

Prost!

We continued our city tour and had a look into old university buildings, on city walls and tasted some specialities like grilled cheese with Preiselbeeren.

We ordered some original Krakauer Wurst and listened the city trumpeter from the Church tower of St. Mary.

The last walk lead us to the walls of Krakau castel to the shores of the Weichsel. I was so impressed, that I had forgot the German name of Polands biggest river.

We returned at 8 pm in time at the Opole HQ to start a few Me262 test games.

Andrzej presented you his beauties some days ago here in the forum and we wanted to start some experiemtal flights together.

Surprisingly Slavek and his boys joined us or the first game and we had a great time.

I was in command of the ace’s Messerschmitt with the red nose.

Have a look at this beauty.

For movement we used the FW 190 Dora R-deck and added some slow maneuvers from an E-Deck to speed up our Schwalbe fighters.
They were that fast! Andrzej nearly left the gaming area with the very first maneuvers.

Nice!

The first run was a disaster.

Slavek and the boys left the HQ victorious and we tested again with 2 Me262 versus two unescorted AI driven Fortresses.
We changed movement and tactics a little bit and started a successful first attack.

We wrecked both bombers but get a real bunch of A-damages in return.

Andrzej showed a lucky hand for explosions this evening, but damaged the G-version a lot with his last salvo. 24 damage points and 2 engines damaged!

Doomed without my wingman I managed to shot down one of the Fortresses, but was downed soon.

We need to improve on tactics again.

We’ll give you an overview about this mission in the WGS section soon, of course with more pictures and detailed maneuver thoughts.

It was an inspiring gaming and one of the results of the Opole jet fighter test center ist, that we’ll host a Me262 mission together during Summer Con next year.
Our “not-so” successful tries were compensated a little bit by the taste of Polish Wyborowa Wodka.
What started with a little shot after two kinds of tasty local soups and during the evening more fuel was needed.

Served ice cold the wodka has a smooth taste and no aftermath if you do not mix it with beer and wine.

Na zdrowie!

After two jetfighter test missions and a short debriefing about the firepower of the Me262, the maneuverability, tactics, bomber formation and needed plane cards we finished the day at 2 am and the left an empty bottle on the table…
